Turn this into a quoteHow the numbers are worked out
- One hour of your time costs your monthly salary divided by the hours you work in a month.
- Your monthly costs become a percentage of your salary, added on top of every hour.
- Your margin goes on top of your time and costs. Gear you charge for a job passes through at cost, with no profit on top.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my hourly rate as a freelancer?
Divide the salary you want each month by the hours you really work in a month. Add your monthly costs as a percentage of that salary, then add your profit margin on top. This calculator does all three steps for you.
What profit margin should a creative business use?
Mizo OS starts creative studios at 35%, which leaves room for slow months and new gear. Below 20% there is little left once the costs are paid. Try a few numbers and look at the day rate each one gives.
Should I charge clients for my gear?
Yes, when the job uses it. Add a day rate for the gear the shoot needs. It is passed through with no profit added, the same way Mizo OS treats gear in every quote.
Is this calculator free?
Yes. No account and no email. Nothing you type leaves your browser. If you want these numbers saved and turned into quotes, Mizo OS has a 7-day free trial.
